What to Wear on a Plane can be a controversial topic. We aren’t getting in the middle of the debate over whether leggings are appropriate. All we’re doing is sharing our favorite outfits for air travel.
April – I second Wendy’s strategy to picking a plane outfit. Comfy shoes and relaxed but presentable gear is always my goal. Here’s to the happy medium between pjs and a suit. Sometimes what I wear on the plane factors into the overall packing strategy. Tennis shoes take up more space than sandals, so if I’m taking both on the trip, I’ll definitely wear the tennis shoes on the plane. Dresses, tights, and t-shirts roll up better than jeans, and jackets and cardigan sweaters take up valuable space, so I save the suitcase real estate for other items. And the shifting temps between airport, plane and destination usually calls for layering. Light jackets and scarfs are great items to keep on hand.
Sunny – I nearly always wear jeans on a plane for similar reasons to April’s strategy. Plus, jeans are pretty much acceptable attire at any location that I tend to visit, I wear them with boots for colder destinations and cuffed to a shorter style for warmer weather. Since I typically nonrev, I am usually following airline guidelines, too. I must admit after the leggings news story, I feel lucky that Jimmy works for a more casual airline! Still, it gives me incentive to put some effort into my travel outfit if I’m representing while traveling on what we affectionately call the “corporate jet.”
Wendy – I used to favor long skirts and comfortable dresses when traveling, but lately have gone for a more sporty/tomboy style. Lazy? Maybe. But not sloppy – no baggy sweatpants with an oversized t-shirt or anything that could be mistaken for pjs. I love a sharp pair of Converse or Adidas with jeans and plaid blouse. Or for longer flights, swap jeans for black yoga pants (that don’t resemble tights) and a non-wrinkly long sleeve shirt. Add a scarf and cute jacket for a bit more polish. I try to book a blowout before leaving on a trip so my hair looks decent, which helps elevate any outfit.
