Showing my Disney Side – Alice in Wonderland

by Sunny

Week three of showing my Disney side takes me down a rabbit hole to Wonderland!  As per my dear dad’s request, here is my version of Disney’s Alice in Wonderland. This came at the perfect time since my middle school students are currently studying the Lewis Carroll poems, “Jabberwocky” and “The Walrus and the Carpenter” in my Literature class.   Pretty cool or as Alice would say, “Curioser and curiouser!”

The character: Alice in Wonderland

The style: Alice is portrayed as a young girl and is actually based on a real child that was a friend of Lewis Carroll. In the Disney film, Alice wears a blue dress and white pinafore.  But since pinafores are so 1800s, I had some updating to do.

My look: As soon as I was tasked with Alice, I immediately started thinking of a jumper.  Since I don’t own a blue jumper, I used this shift dress over a white puff-sleeve button down that captures both the colors and general silhouette of Alice’s outfit.  I matched my black flats with my black headband for the signature Alice look.

The reaction: I wore this look to work last week, and it didn’t dawn on me until the third time  I heard “you blend in with the students” that I was wearing a pretty similar uniform as the kids: navy skirts with white polos.   I guess I should explain that I often get teased about “blending in with the students” because at 5 foot nothing most of my middle-schoolers are taller than me.  Oh well, I did get at least one compliment from a fellow teacher.  Also, I love that this dress has pockets. And last but not least, there were no white rabbit sightings and I made it everywhere on time!

Stay tuned for my next Disney Muse: by special request, Mulan.
