There is nothing better than picking out the perfect novel to take on your next trip. But wouldn’t you agree there are some books that inspire you to travel or get you super psyched to visit a new destination?  Here are four suggestions for books to read before you travel to that new city.

Eloise at the Plaza by Kay Thompson (preschool, early readers) – New York City

eloise books

Don’t be shy about taking a preschooler to NYC.  It will make you see the city in a whole new light.  Don’t forget to brush up on your Eloise books before you leave, or better yet, pack some for the plane ride or car trip.  It will get them excited about seeing the big city in person. Don’t forget to visit The Plaza Hotel when you are there.  Take a picture next to the giant Eloise painting in the lobby, and check out the Eloise gift shop downstairs.  Who can say no to a book souvenir?

Where’d You Go Bernadette by Maria Semple  – Seattle

I actually read this book after I visited Seattle, and it was a fun reminder of my trip there.  The main story takes place in Seattle with a mentally unstable yet charming protagonist. Part of the story also takes place in Antarctica so do with that what you will.

Divergent Series by Veronica Roth  (Young Adult) – Chicago

divergent

Got moody teenagers who have no interest in a family trip to Chicago?  Have them read Divergent.  The 3 book series is set in a dystopian future (aren’t they all nowadays?) and follows 16-year-old Tris as she discovers hidden truths about her family, government, and society.  Teens will love the skyscraper ziplining scene and will totally be envisioning themselves flying from building to building as you tour the Windy City.

One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams Garcia  (middle school) – San Francisco

This is a historical fiction story set in San Francisco during the Civil Rights Movement.  Three young girls are sent to live with their estranged mother who abandoned them years earlier.  The mother places the  girls in a Black Panther Summer Camp.   Tweens will enjoy the storytelling and learn about an important historical time period as well!

I love this topic. I’m sure JD Salinger novels inspired my obsession with NYC in high school and college. I was ready to move there and hang out with Holden Caulfield and the Glass Family.
