Kids and Travel Memories

So many times, I wonder how many travel memories stick with my 7 year old.  She’s been traveling since she was 6 months, and I know that many of those early memories she only remembers through pictures.  But every once in a while, she will surprise me by recalling a past travel memory that has stuck with her.  Recently, she recalled a favorite travel memory during Social Studies class.  The second grade was studying communities and on this day, markets in particular.  The assignment was to draw a picture of a market and write about it.  And though MJ remembers it being in “Sam” Francisco, Pike Place Market is what she chose to draw and write about.  (In her defense, we visited Seattle and San Francisco during the same vacation.)

Here is her drawing.  Note the checkerboard floor, fish, flower bouquets, and cider booth.

And here is her paragraph.  I’ve translated for you beneath the picture.

fullsizerender“This place is not near my house.  I was on a trip to San Francisco.  This is Pike Place Market.  On my trip I got flowers.  I almost kissed a fish!  I loved it.  I wish I can go there again.”

And she was right about so many details.  She did get flowers. Tulips, in particular, because that is her dog’s name.

She loved sampling the apple cider.

And she did indeed almost kiss a fish!

Pucker up at Pike Place!

What was an otherwise unremarkable assignment, became a treasure that I will keep forever!  This is a prime example of why travel is such an important component of our family life.  Have you ever had this experience?  What are your favorite childhood travel memories?
