Raise your hand if you love the National Air and Space Museum. Oh, I do too. One of the best things about being in DC is spending a day walking on the National Mall and visiting multiple museums. But did you know there is a second Air and Space location near Dulles Airport? The Udvar-Hazy Center in Virginia is worth the short trip, even if you have to pay to park.
First, check out the observation tower with its air traffic control exhibits and soaring views. You can see planes glide through the air to land on Dulles runways or depart into the sky – and if you’re like me, immediately start dreaming of destinations across the ocean.
Your urge to book a ticket on your favorite airline will likely increase as you tour the rest of the museum, which is essentially a giant hangar chock-a-block with aircraft, both beautiful and badass. I love Jack’s description: it’s like a toddler overturned a toy box full of model airplanes to let them scatter all over the floor. You may feel childlike wonder as you explore the collection and marvel at the designs and history, as well as the skill and intelligence of those who build, fly and maintain such intricate machines.
There is a section where you can watch current restoration work underway. How fascinating is that?
Even if none of this does it for you, I think you’ll still be impressed by this museum. Why? It has a space shuttle!
In 2012, I remember going outside my office building on a clear bright morning to gaze at the sky. Others had the same idea. And then there it was. For a few minutes, the air and space around us included the Discovery shuttle atop a large jet, flying over DC on the way to Dulles and its eventual home in the museum.
It’s amazing to stand in front of the shuttle and view it up close.
If it’s your first trip to DC, by all means stay in DC and visit the National Mall. But if you’re looking for new ideas – or just want a double dose of Air and Space coolness – take the time to spend a few hours at Udvar-Hazy.
