Back from Incredible Iceland

by Wendy
I am just back from visiting Iceland with Jack and my parents. It was amazing and we look forward to sharing many stories on the blog. Right now, I think we’re all still in the midst of jet lag, unpacking, organizing, and getting back into the work routine – but I keep stopping to look at photos, jot down a few notes and feel grateful for such an epic vacation.

Summer Uniform

by Wendy
This summer, I noticed there were certain items of clothing that I reached for nearly every weekend. Putting together outfits can be creative and fun, but sometimes it’s nice to have a seasonal uniform/capsule wardobe that you don’t spend too much time and energy thinking about. Could be a leftover habit from my Catholic school days.  Continue reading

Beach Weather Gamble: Part Two

by Wendy
Beach weather gamble Part One was much more dramatic than this story. Just a few weeks ago, Jack and I were looking forward to a weekend getaway in Dewey Beach, Delaware. Then weather reports start predicting rain Friday – Sunday. We almost cancel, but decide to go for it. Let’s see your cards, Dewey Beach! We can deal with a little rain. Continue reading

Beach Weather Gamble: Part One

How many times have you obsessively checked the weather leading up to a beach visit, only to be totally surprised by the weather that actually occurs.

Years ago, Jack and I went to one of our favorite islands, Puerto Rico, for a week’s stay. We arrive to warm tropical sun, settle in at a cool resort with several beautiful pools in front of a beautiful beach, and bask in the first day vacation glow with drinks at the outdoor tiki hut. Later that evening, the bartender we’re chatting with mentions that severe weather might be on the way. The next day’s skies are mild, but then a note from the hotel slides under the door informing us that Hurricane Irene’s path now indicates that it will hit the island and could we please move all balcony patio furniture inside? Summer Weather

by Wendy
It is really hot outside and temperatures in this area of the country may continue to rise. Evening approaches and it still feels like 103 degrees. Weather like this can make you feel so lethargic. Around town, tourists look desparate to visit as many sights and monuments as they can before the sweltering heat practically forces them indoors.

I keep reminding myself that it will be like this soon enough, so it’s important to enjoy the summer. Time to be thankful for air conditioning, chilled drinks, ice cream and days when I don’t have to ride the sweaty metro train. Time to take refuge from extreme weather with Netflix and a bottle of wine (also fun during snowstorms). Time to seek out beautiful beaches and refreshing pools. May we all feel as cool as a Barcelona rooftop pool for the rest of the summer.

When you love to travel, you learn to love airports. I’ve offered suggestions on how to spend quality time in an airport in a previous post, and told you all about a beautiful vending machine in another. During a recent trip, I spotted a few additional alternatives for those of us cultivating the art of cheerfully waiting around for a flight. Continue reading

Shakes on a Plane

by Wendy

I’m a pretty good traveler, but slightly prone to motion sickness on planes, trains and automobiles. I don’t take any medicine for it because I really don’t know when it will strike. On a plane, it’s usually due to turbulence. I’ve only puked on a plane once, and would like to keep it that way.

There were many bumps along the way when I flew from Baltimore to Las Vegas (en route to Reno) a few weeks ago, and I did.not.feel.great.

But I did not puke. Here are a few tips I use to prevent or combat motion sickness caused by Shakes on a Plane! Continue reading
