Just like the old television character “MacGyver” who was constantly using everyday objects to get himself out of trouble, here are a few tricks I’ve used to temporarily fix various clothes and beauty issues. I can’t guarantee they’ll work in every situation, but you may find something to inspire an even better solution. Above all don’t give up – you can pull it together before you fall apart. Usually.
Arrive at work and realize your trusty black shoes have a few scuff marks? Find a Sharpie in the supplies closet and color in the spots. Better yet, stash one of those hotel shoe shine sponges in your desk drawer for emergencies.
Need to touch up a wrinkly blouse collar or skirt hem without dragging out the whole ironing board? Try using your hair flat iron.
Got caught in the rain and now have frizzy hair? A bit of hand lotion can work in a pinch.
No hand lotion? So now you’ve got frizzy hair AND dry hands? God help us all. Stick with me now…try a swipe of clear lip balm to smooth the hair and the hands. It’s not perfect but we’re obviously dealing with an emergency here.
Forget your eyeliner in your travel makeup kit? Apply a smudge of mascara with a Q-tip and try an edgy smokey eye.
Always carry a safety pin in your bag. This is critical for lost blouse buttons, or a torn hem.
Spill a bit of something on your outfit? I usually try wet wipe/hand sanitizer as a first attempt, and many times it’s successful.
Worried about pickpockets in a crowded space? The fastener for luggage tags can also be used as a sort of lock for your purse – if you can find one thin enough to loop through your zipper and purse strap.
Depending where the seams are, you can make a few alterations yourself without paying a tailor. I’ve cut away the crinoline slip underneath a cool retro party dress I bought on sale. On another dress, I used scissors to remove the attached belt so I could add a different one.
Repeating the same 4 outfits because it’s easy? When you don’t have the energy to design new looks, break the cycle starting with accessories. Most women have a costume jewelry stash, so make it a rule to add an extra piece: earrings, bracelet, necklace, sparkly barrette, cocktail ring. Change purses. Wear a different scarf.
Forgot a lint brush? Try a piece of scotch tape.
Thrown a bunch of clothes in the washing machine and realize you’ve got about one drop of laundry detergent left? Baking soda and hot water seems to get things clean.
I need to use these tips more than I care to admit. Apparently I’m about 5 seconds away from my outfit basically self-destructing on a regular basis. Please share your fixes below!
