Packing for one can be stressful enough, but add a kid to the mix and it can be enough to lose your mind. Looks and Leaps to the rescue! Here are a few packing Do’s and Don’ts to avoid any “Doh’s!” while traveling with little ones.
DO get them involved. Let them pick a couple of items for the suitcase, a favorite character t-shirt or a beloved sundress. It helps get them excited for the trip, may save on wardrobe meltdowns, and sets the groundwork for teaching them the basis of packing!
DO bring a swimsuit. You don’t want to realize there is a swimming opportunity and not be prepared. This is an unforgiveable offense if you have kids who love the water. Indoor pools are especially a hit if you live in or are traveling to a colder climate. And boy were we glad we brought MJ’s swimsuit to Chicago. There is a beach adjacent to Navy Pier that we didn’t know existed. Now it’s on our must-do list.
DO overpack. Let’s just expect that there will be spills and chills that will not leave you thrilled. Always pack a layering jacket or sweater for cool evenings and restaurants. I never plan on MJ wearing the same clothes twice. If she gets to, great! But chances are her clothes will be stained or dirty by the end of a day of sightseeing and playtime.
DO leave room for souveniers. I’ve never met a kid who didn’t like to shop for souveniers. Before the trip see if they can save a few dollars to spend and make sure you have a little extra room to cart home the “treasures” they scout out at the destination gift shops (but maybe not too much room – it’s easier to talk them out of the 6 ft stuffed animal that way).
DON’T pack new shoes. This one should be noted for the adults, too. Be especially mindful of shoes if your child is transitioning out of a stroller. If they won’t have that convenient mobile seat they are used to, the shoes better be broken in or comfy or be prepared to give a lot of piggyback rides!
DON’T forget the lovey! Many children have a special toy that calms them or helps them fall asleep. This can come in handy on the airplane, in the car, or in the unfamiliar hotel room. It’s a connection to home and a pal to share the travel adventure with!
DON’T forget the entertainment – Electronics are a given, but also check your local dollar stores for inexpensive toys and games. Check out some of our favorite ways to Enjoy the Journey here, here, or here!
DON’T worry – Unless you are traveling to a remote location, chances are you can find anything you may have left behind at a local shop. Thanks to smartphones, the location of the nearest convenient store is right in your hands!
